Welcome to Norwegian Center of Excellence in Hydrogen - India (CoE-H India) and the Norwegian -Indian H2cluster landing site.

About Us

Center Vision:

CoE-H is a world leading competence center for green Hydrogen - making the shift from fossil to renewable energy with zero emission possible.

Mission:

CoE is a collaborative hydrogen competence center established by joint efforts between Government institutions and agencies, Industry, Research institutions and Academia from both Norway and India. The CoE-H offers facilitation of business collaboration and -development as well as information and guidelines to accelerate the shift from fossil to renewable energy with zero emission by exploring hydrogen as a sustainable energy carrier in the energy system.

COE-H Goals

  • establishing a center of excellence by uniting Government institutions and agencies, Industry, Research institutions and Academia from both Norway and India

  • sharing of knowledge and competencies

  • think tank for development and business ideas

  • facilitating

    • spinouts

    • business collaborations

    • commercialization of business ideas

    • meeting arenas

    • temporary and fixed office facilities

    • increased trade and collaboration between India – Norway

    • R&D projects and exchange program

Objectives:

  • Develop state of the art center to carry out R&D on materials and equipment used by the industry in Hydrogen energy value chain at progressive educational Institute with support from Norwegian Hydrogen Cluster.

  • Advise on alternative choices of technology being adopted and bring out the techno commercial feasibility of such choices based upon best practices

  • Advise on regulatory and policy matters related to Hydrogen energy industry in India and provide support to the industry and its partners

  • Develop a data base for pilot and demo projects data to assist industry in simulating Hydrogen energy potential, solutions at various potential locations

  • Assisting in commercialization of Hydrogen technologies or applications of relevance to India

  • Assist in developing policy and technological solutions to India’s transition from fossil to non-fossil fuel and zero-emission society

  • To contribute towards awareness and increased knowledge for Hydrogen Issues at State, National and International Level

  • Explore the potential of clean hydrogen to help the process of decarbonizing the Indian economy in a cost-effective way, in line with the 2050 climate-neutrality goal

  • Assist in the Decarbonizing of the energy sector

  • Provide consulting services to industry, utilities, and regulators on choice of technology, economics, and policy

Major Research Areas of the Centre:

Production

R&D efforts on the generation of clean hydrogen from different feedstocks through a variety of processes. The process of creating hydrogen via electrolysis to store renewable electricity from wind or solar in a form that will provide dispatchable lower-carbon energy to consumers that could be used for remote and back-up power generation. Testing, evaluating, and optimizing renewable electrolysis system performance for hydrogen production and electricity/hydrogen cogeneration.

CCS

The purpose of CO2 capture and storage (CCS) is to minimize CO2 emissions from fossil fuels and industry processes. CoE will conducts research on the whole value chain for CO2 capture, transport and storage. carbon capture and/or carbon sequestration in a cost-effective manner, clean hydrogen can be generated from hydrocarbons for large scale or smaller distributed production. Improve developed technologies to make hydrogen on-site from renewable feedstocks to minimize costs of hydrogen transportation. Improve micro-scale steam methane reforming (SMR) technology utilizes renewable gas from digester plants or landfills to generate hydrogen on-site

International Benchmarks

Every country, every society and every economy has acknowledged that CO2 and GHG is real challenges/concerns and would have great impact in our lifetime itself. Hence every stakeholder has already taken or have started taking measures towards mitigation of it but will fail without Hydrogen. Every challenge has its unique context, hence a unique solution. It is imperative to learn and adopt and share from experience of past.

Storage and Delivery

Hydrogen is an emerging option for energy storage. We want to facilitate for further exploration and determine appropriate hydrogen blends, develop, and test material types and pipeline components, optimize operating conditions, and assess end use equipment compatibility for large-scale infrastructure deployment. Standardization of building codes for hydrogen facilities and underground storage requirements should be areas to be further studied.

Safety, Codes, and Standards

Develop guidelines for hydrogen safety, codes, and standards projects focus on ensuring safe operation, handling, and use of hydrogen and hydrogen systems through safety sensors and codes and standards for buildings and equipment

Hydrogen Policy Analysis

Policy is the defining measure for creating an enabling framework towards Hydrogen Eco system. The Government must provide policy instruments through in-depth discussions with all stakeholders of the society.

Expected Outcomes
with associated timelines of the Centre:

Development of new technologies:

Develop competence in storage and delivery technology development, design, and testing

Focus on development of materials, devices including storage materials and methods

Identify research goals and thrust areas of research

Support research across the entire value chain

Involve industry in research and technology validation projects.

Rigorous simulation and modeling for the development of optimum Hydrogen technologies.

The outcome of the research should lead to:

  • improvements in the efficiencies

  • reduction in the material and energy consumption in manufacturing,

  • improving the reliability, quality, and life expectancy of the balance of system components

Undertaking Research Projects:

The center would undertake research projects for various departments of state, central government and international partners in the Norwegian Hydrogen cluster in the above-mentioned focus and research areas. The aim of the research project shall be inputs on Hydrogen policy evaluation, policy monitoring and policy formulation.

Conference:

The CoE-H center aims to bring key national / international stakeholders annually on one platform to deliberate, discuss and decide the way forward for the Global Roadmap for Hydrogen  and cooperation target at achievable levels and ensuring that future trajectories are correctly charted out. In parallel, the center will show case its outcomes on other national and international platforms to have inputs on the undertaken work.

Organizing Training Programs:

The CoE-H center would develop human resources in the government who understand and apply best practices and policy in the practice. Training programs in all the areas of the Hydrogen value chain change will be undertaken. The technological workshop will aim to develop general knowledge about all aspects of Hydrogen Eco-system.

Policy Advisory:

The outcome would be to provide inputs to concerned government authorities while new policy formulation in Climate Change domain is underway or when the changes in the earlier versions of policy in Climate Change domain are being discussed.
